SupportNine years. Thirty-four editions. Countless stories.
Gippslandia has been more than a publication—it’s been a platform, a conversation, a
community, and a catalyst for showcasing the incredible people, places,
and ideas that make our region so special.
Like many, I have mixed emotions about seeing this chapter come to a close. How could I not? Since launching, I’ve seen my family grow (and grow some more), and the world around us has changed dramatically—heck, a lot happens in nine years. And yet this project, always rooted in positivity, has been a constant.
“My hope is that its spirit—of curiosity, storytelling, and highlighting the best of Gippsland—continues in new ways.”

I’ve been lucky enough to experience Gippslandia in many ways—each bringing its own meaning and impact.
As a reader...
I’ve been inspired, informed, and challenged. The joy of sitting down with a coffee and flipping through its pages—seeing our region and its people celebrated—has been a rare and valued experience. It’s been a source of pride, a way to stay connected. And, in a world full of clickbait headlines and fake news, I can’t help but wonder: what will fill that space for me now?
As a contributor...
I’ve had the privilege of sharing stories and perspectives—always with a mix of excitement and imposter syndrome—seeing my words in such a high-quality publication. Writing for Gippslandia pushed me to refine my thinking, my voice, and how I communicate ideas that matter.
I’m grateful for every opportunity to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), and for the excuse to meet and curiously interview so many inspiring individuals—some encounters I’ll forever treasure.
One such moment was interviewing the late Ted Hopkins, sitting in his apartment—the same space frequented by so many great AFL coaches seeking insight from the man behind Champion Data. While we were there to talk sport, it was his passion for the region that struck me most. He proudly claimed he was a Gippslandian first, Australian second. The publication reconnected him to Gippsland—and those moments were precious.
As someone behind the scenes,
I know just how much heart, sweat, and determination has gone into making Gippslandia what it became.
From day one, we chose the road less travelled—building something bold, independent, and different.
It’s been a privilege to be part of a team that worked tirelessly to bring each edition to life. In those early days, I could never have imagined the impact this publication would go on to have. Pulling it together was always a group effort—often a slugfest—followed by a couple of weeks of radio silence as we each recovered and put ourselves back together.
While many played significant roles, a few were there from the beginning. The great Tim Leeson was a powerhouse in shaping the editorial direction, mentoring and lifting others along the way. And John, Si and the team never failed to bring their design brilliance and flair to the table.
I’ll miss the buzz that came with each new edition. I’ll miss being part of something so organic and values-driven.
In today’s media landscape, how many people can genuinely step away from a publication and say that with pride? It’s an industry where values are too often the downfall—not the differentiator.
As a proud Gippslandian,
I know this region is full of world-class talent, creativity, and ambition. Gippslandia gave those voices a platform—not as a glossy promotional piece, but something deeper. Something real. It encouraged thought, sparked conversation, and created a space for celebration in a way few regional publications have managed.
My hope is that its spirit—of curiosity, storytelling, and highlighting the best of Gippsland—continues in new ways. Because recognising and valuing storytelling isn’t just about preserving the past; it’s about shaping the future of our region, our identity, and how we connect with one another.
In what might be my final chance to sneak some NBA into a Gippslandia article, Kobe Bryant once said, “If we’re going to make the world a better place, story is the right place to start,” and “nothing in this world moves without story.”
Here’s hoping the next bold idea that puts storytelling at its heart gets the support—and the love—it deserves. Our region needs it.
What I know for sure is that Gippslandia’s impact won’t fade with its final edition. The stories it has shared, the connections it’s created, and the ideas it’s sparked will continue to ripple outward.
And while this journey is wrapping up, I’ve no doubt that everyone involved—contributors, readers, supporters—will take that energy and channel it into whatever comes next.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made Gippslandia possible—none more so than the readers who created the demand, and the partners and supporters who dug into their own pockets to help bring it to life. We were simply there to join the dots, and we couldn’t be prouder of how we did it.
It’s been one incredible ride.
Thank you,
Michael
